Botswana, with its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, is a premier destination for safari enthusiasts.

Whether you’re an experienced traveler or planning your first adventure, understanding the best time to visit can significantly enhance your experience.

Each season offers unique opportunities to witness the beauty of the African wilderness.

In this post, we’ll explore the different seasons in Botswana and what they mean for your safari experience.

Winter: The Ideal Safari Season

Winter, which spans from May to September, is often regarded as the best time for a safari in Botswana.

The days are beautiful, sunny, and warm, making it perfect for outdoor adventures.

With less rainfall during these months, the vegetation becomes more sparse, allowing for easier spotting of game.

As the water sources become more limited, animals congregate around water holes, providing excellent opportunities for viewing and photography.

Another advantage of the winter months is that there are fewer mosquitoes.

However, it’s important to note that temperatures can really plunge after sunset, so it is best to pack layers for the chilly nights and early mornings.

The lodges will provide you with hot water bottles and as many extra blankets as you may need.

Most lodges DO NOT have electric blankets.

Summer: A Different Kind of Beauty

Summer in Botswana, from October to April, brings vibrant life to the landscape with seasonal rains and lush greenery.

However, the summer months can present challenges for safari-goers.

Again, make sure you have packed properly. There’s a lot of things people take with ‘just incase,’ but they never need it.

Know that October is the hottest month – I was just there in October 2024, and the day time temperatures averaged around 38 °C.

When the rains start from around November/ December, the vegetation obviously grows and the longer grass makes it more difficult to spot animals.

Walking safaris generally don’t happen in summer as its less safe due to the dense vegetation and animals tend to hide in the long grass. It also can make it more difficult to spot wildlife.

Despite these challenges, summer rains rejuvenate the environment, leading to spectacular scenes of blooming flora and active wildlife.

Migratory birds flock to the region, providing excellent birdwatching opportunities. Additionally, the cooler mornings and evenings can be a refreshing contrast to the warm days.

If you’re keen on witnessing the birthing season for many species, and seeing loads of the cutest baby animals you might ever get to see in their natural environment, summer is the time to visit.

Spring and Autumn: The Sweet Spots

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) serve as transitional periods that offer a delightful compromise between the extremes of summer and winter.

During these months, temperatures are generally mild—not too hot or too cold—making it a comfortable time for safari adventures.

The game viewing is often excellent, as animals are still active and the vegetation, while lush, is not as dense as in the peak summer months.

Traveling during these shoulder seasons can also be a bit more budget-friendly, as rates are typically lower than the peak winter season.

To Sum it All Up…

Choosing the best time for a safari in Botswana ultimately depends on your personal preferences and what you hope to experience.

And your budget.

Winter offers ideal conditions for game viewing, while summer brings a vibrant landscape alive with new birth and lots of birding activity.

Spring and autumn provide a wonderful balance of comfort and affordability, with good opportunities for wildlife encounters.

No matter when you visit, Botswana’s rich biodiversity and breathtaking scenery promise an unforgettable adventure.

Happy safari planning!
