High Tea at Ladurée in Cape Town

Happy birthday to me! That was in August and a friend of mine treated me to a special birthday high tea at Ladurée in the Waterfront in Cape Town.

Wow! I must be honest, I don’t go to the Waterfront often so this was an outing in itself with so many people around; the place was buzzing!

And I had never heard of this before (probably because I don’t go to the Waterfront).

Ladurée is inside the mall on the upper level and even though its ‘right there’ it is also quite discreet. It is also located at the end of the passage that leads into The Table Bay Hotel, but you don’t see that from the restaurant.

The concept of Ladurée was born in Paris, France in 1862 and offers the elegance of sweet treats including macarons and other amazing pastries.

The current price on the menu is either R750 or R975, and this is based on two people sharing.

This includes:

2 x hot drinks of your choice from the tea and coffee selection
2 x sweets from the list (on the left)
2 x savouries (from the middle list)
2 x mini sandwiches (from the list on the right)
2 x macarons

And oh my gosh, they did not disappoint! I had the Tarte Citron Meringueé which is a sweet pastry with lemon confit and cream, topped with Italian meringue and it was absolutely delicious. It you enjoy citrus, definitely order this.

My friend ordered a Plaisir Sucré which is a hazelnut dacquoise, milk chocolate ganache and whipped cream. Ooh lala! We actually split them so got to try both. So divine!

It doesn’t sound like a lot, but I ended up taking home the macaron and the croissant and only had one hot drink. It is a lot to eat even though we were there for about four hours. but we had great conversation, lots of laughs and so much to catch up on and you are in no way at all rushed so they can turn the table.

One of our friends ordered the giant pink macaron shown above. This is called an Ispahan and is a rose petal macaron with raspberries and lychees. It tasted like something you would imagine a princess eating. It was so good.

You can also order your selection of sweets from the shop, but high tea is a very special treat.

They don’t only have macarons and confectionaries; you can also order breakfast, brunch or lunch and they do have a liquor license for those wanting to pair their treats with some bubbles.

Is it worth it?

Yes! If you are wanting to treat yourself but still maintain a casual vibe, I highly recommend you make a booking for your own high tea at Ladurée and spend an afternoon sitting, chilling, tasting, laughing and having a great time.
