Botswana is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, and one of the best countries to go on a safari, especially if its your first time.

Let’s take a look at what to expect on a safari in Botswana.

Remember that each lodge is different so the activities and the wildlife will also differ. Do your research before your book, but overall, this is what you can expect.

If you’re planning a luxury safari in Botswana, expect world-class lodges, breathtaking landscapes, and amazing game viewing.

Here’s what you need to know before embarking on this unforgettable journey.

Most luxury safaris in Botswana begin in Maun or Kasane, the country’s main safari gateways. From here, you’ll typically take a scenic light aircraft flight directly to your lodge, offering stunning aerial views of the Okavango Delta and surrounding areas.

These flights not only save time but also give you a spectacular introduction to the wilderness. 99.9% of the time it’s also the only way you can get to the lodge.

Once in Botswana, you’ll travel between camps via small bush planes. These light aircraft flights provide breathtaking views of the landscape below and allow access to remote, exclusive lodges that cannot be reached by road.

The experience of flying over the Delta or vast desert is a highlight in itself.

Keep a look out for ellies that you can spot from the air, especially when coming in to land!

Luxury safaris in Botswana are known for their intimate, high-end lodges located in private concessions.

Unlike traditional camping safaris, these lodges offer opulent amenities, including:

  • Elegant Suites & Tented Villas – Spacious, beautifully designed accommodations with private decks, plunge pools, and outdoor showers.
  • Fine Dining – Gourmet meals prepared by expert chefs, featuring fresh, local ingredients and paired with world-class wines (premium brands are not included in the rate).
  • Exceptional Service – Personalized service, expert guides, and top-tier hospitality ensure a seamless experience.
  • Eco-Luxury Features – Most lodges operate sustainably, using solar power, low-impact infrastructure, and conservation-focused tourism.
  • Private Concessions – Most lodges are on a private concession which means vehicles from other camps will be around the same area that you are.

When you are on a safari, there is no chance of you going hungry.

Your morning starts with coffee and rusks before your game drive.
On your game drive there is usually a stop in beautiful surrounds, and you’ll be given delicious, freshly baked snacks.
When you return to the lodge around 10h00 / 11h00, its’ time for brunch.
Around 16h00 you will be served high tea,
Out on a game activity again, and yes you guessed it, more delicious snacks!
And when you get back to the lodge, dinner will be ready.

Special dietary requirements are catered for with prior notice.

Meals are often served in breathtaking settings, including bush breakfasts and candlelit dinners under the stars.

Safaris in Botswana offer a mix of exciting experiences, tailored to what YOU want to do (and depending, of course, on what is available at that particular camp).

1. Game Drives (Morning & Evening)

  • Expert-Led Drives – Each safari vehicle is guided by a professional tracker and guide, ensuring close encounters with Africa’s iconic wildlife.
  • Big Five & Beyond – Spot lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, and a variety of other species, often without the crowds found in other safari destinations.
  • Sundowner Stops – Evening drives include a stop at a scenic location to enjoy a cocktail while watching the gorgeous sunset, so make sure your phones and cameras are powered up.

2. Mokoro Canoe Safaris (Okavango Delta)

For a more tranquil experience, glide through the Delta’s waterways in a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe), spotting hippos, crocodiles, and exotic birds.

3. Walking Safaris

Some private concessions offer guided bush walks, allowing you to experience the wilderness up close and learn about tracking animals, local flora, and smaller creatures often missed on game drives.

4. Boat & River Safaris (Chobe & Moremi)

Explore the waterways of the Chobe River or Moremi Game Reserve, witnessing herds of elephants bathing and drinking at the water’s edge.

5. Helicopter & Scenic Flights

Many luxury lodges offer the option of a scenic helicopter flight over the Okavango Delta, giving you a bird’s-eye view of this unique landscape and its wildlife. This is not included in the lodge price and is an additional cost, but the camp manager can book this for you if you forgot to do it beforehand.

Once the sun sets, things change.

Predators go on the hunt, animals gather in their herds, silence drops. Night time is a different world to day time, and here ‘s what you can expect on safari in Botswana – during the night.

Boma Nights

Many lodges offer a special boma night on a specific day of the week, where guests enjoy traditional African cuisine around an open fire while listening to cultural storytelling and local music and sometimes singing. It’s an unforgettable way to experience local traditions.

Noises at Night

Expect to hear lions roaring, hyenas laughing, or elephants trumpeting in the distance. These sounds are part of the immersive experience, reminding you that you’re deep in the wild. Stay inside your tent and you’ll be fine. Never go outside for a better look!

Your Guide is Not Lost

Night drives can seem disorienting, but rest assured, your expert guide knows exactly where they’re going. They use their deep knowledge of the terrain and tracking skills to navigate safely. Just like you know how to get to you mom’s house without a map, they know these areas just as well.

Seeing a predator on the hunt is one of the most thrilling safari experiences. Witnessing lions, leopards, or wild dogs chase down their prey offers a raw and real insight into nature’s cycle of life. But even though it is the Circle of Life, it can be quite hectic. Some animals do make a lot of noise when they’re caught and in my opinion, it isn’t pleasant.

Many luxury lodges offer wellness facilities, including gyms, yoga decks, and spa treatments. After an exhilarating day of game drives, unwind with a deep-tissue massage or a rejuvenating facial while overlooking the wilderness.

Running a luxury safari camp requires a dedicated team. The staff-to-guest ratio is high but often you don’t see all of these people because they are back-of-house. Think of the chefs, the housekeeping staff, maintenance teams, and sometimes conservationists and researchers, each lodge is operated by a large team working seamlessly to ensure your experience is extraordinary.

Tipping is customary but not obligatory. Many lodges provide tipping guidelines, but a general rule is:

  • Guides & Trackers: $10–$20 per guest per day
  • Lodge Staff: $5–$10 per guest per day (usually this is pooled)

In Botswana you can tip in US Dollars, or you can leave a tip with your credit card at most lodges.

  • Peak Wildlife Viewing (winter: June – October) – The dry season offers the best game viewing, as animals congregate around water sources.
  • Green Season (summer: November – May) – Lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and excellent birdwatching, though wildlife is more dispersed.
