One of the great things about travelling to Cape Town, is that there is truly something for everyone. And if you’re a water baby, you won’t be left out.
I want to talk to you about the best watersports found along the south beaches of Cape Town.
From the thrills of shark cage diving to interesting snorkeling spots, and even biking on the water, the coastline of Cape Town running from Muizenberg to Simon’s Town, has it all.
First off, you need to know that this whole area I am talking about in this article is part of False Bay.
False Bay is a massive bay, running right round from Cape Point in the west, to Cape Hangklip and the Hottentots Holland in the east.
Let’s take a look on a map of the Cape Peninsula. This is False Bay with the city of Cape Town in the top left of the image.
Muizenberg and Simon’s Town are the two main areas where there is plenty of water sport action to keep you busy. They are only 14kms apart and it will take you about 30 minutes (if there isn’t any traffic) to get from Muizenberg to Simon’s Town.

Surfing
So grab your gear, pack your sense of adventure, and get ready to make a splash. Welcome to the vibrant beachfront of Muizenberg!
While it may not be the largest beach around, it’s always buzzing with relaxed folks and a groovy beach atmosphere.
| Travel Tip: If you’re visiting in summer, make sure you get there early to secure a parking spot, as it fills up very quickly. |
On the beachfront, there are three great surf schools. They all have qualified surfing instructors if you need a lesson and they can help you with private lessons or group classes.

You can also rent all of the equipment you need from them. This includes the wetsuit, leash, and board which are available in various sizes.
For those more experienced, head down the Main Road from Muizenberg for approximately 2kms, and try catching a few waves at Danger Beach, commonly referred to by locals as ‘Dangers’ .
There aren’t any surf schools here so you’ll need to bring your own equipment, there isn’t a lifeguard here, and you need to watch out for the reef. Although, that is the reason why experienced surfers head out that way.
Muizenberg is not only a surfer’s paradise but also very popular with body boarders.
Bodyboarding
Hats off to those who can already do a cutback or 360 spin, but for others, the waves in Muizenberg are generally chilled enough for all ages to try bodyboarding.
Even if you just want to lie on your board and try and ride the small waves back into shore.
Don’t worry if you don’t have your own bodyboard. You can also rent one from the surf schools or local beach rental shops.
They’ll provide you with a suitable bodyboard, booties, leashes, and flippers, ensuring you have an incredible time out on the waves.
Sea Kayaking
One of the amazing things about the sea and waves in False Bay is their ever-changing nature.
Before embarking on a sea kayaking adventure, it’s important to check the sea and weather conditions, as they can vastly overnight.
While surfers may enjoy the waves on some days, other days offer calm waters that are perfect for a sea kayaking experience.
On this side of the Peninsula, Simon’s Town is the place to be for sea kayaking. Head to Seaforth Beach, located adjacent to Boulders Beach (the beach famous for its African penguins), and you’ll find an excellent option for booking a kayak tour.
Sea kayaking on a gorgeous calm day is one of the more relaxing watersports in Cape Town. As you paddle along the coast, you’ll have the opportunity to get up close to the fascinating marine life that is in the area.
Deep Sea Fishing
For those seeking an exhilarating deep-sea fishing experience, Simons Town remains the top destination along this coastal stretch. Here, you’ll find charter companies ready to take you out into the deep waters, equipping you with everything you need for a memorable fishing expedition.
One renowned charter company in Simon’s Town is Big Blue Sport Fishing Charters.
With years and years of experience, they are dedicated to providing an exceptional sports fishing experience.
Whether it’s tuna, skipjack, snoek, or any other species that are in season or running at the time, Big Blue Sport Fishing Charters will ensure you have the best chance of a successful catch.
These charters are designed to cater to your comfort and enjoyment. The skilled crew will guide you through the process, offering tips and tricks to enhance your fishing skills. They’ll also provide you with the necessary equipment, including high-quality fishing tackle, so you can focus on doing the thing you’re there to do, and that’s fish!
Snorkelling
While this coast is often referred to as the “warm” water coast, it’s worth noting that the Atlantic Ocean prevails here, only merging with the Indian Ocean at Struisbaai, a few hours’ drive away. However, don’t let that deter you.
When it comes to snorkeling, Simon’s Town, for me personally, is a gem. The beaches of Boulders Beach, Windmill Beach, and Seaforth are gorgeous, and offer some of the finest snorkeling spots in the area.

To enjoy snorkeling in these locations, if you’re on your own, it’s important to bring your own gear as there are no rental options available directly in Simon’s Town.
Or you can book a tour and the equipment will be provided for you.
If you are nervous, I would suggest a tour as then you have someone with you, they know this part of the sea and you can relax.
I personally like snorkelling at Windmill Beach as there are large boulders naturally creating a giant rockpool, and you’re protected from the wider ocean by the kelp forest.
What you can see in a ‘smallish’ space is quite amazing: octopus, obviously various fish, but even pajama sharks and shy sharks are common here.
To get snorkelling equipment, you can visit chain stores in Cape Town, such as Sportsman’s Warehouse, where you’ll find a range of gear to suit your needs and it isn’t that expensive.
Another option is to prearrange a rental from In Between the Kelp, a free-diving and snorkeling company, which offers snorkeling equipment rental services, and they can also take you on tours too.
Otherwise you can book a scheduled day tour online – they’ll pick you up, sort out everything you need, and make sure you have an amazing day in the ocean.
Now, in addition to Simon’s Town, another notable location is Clovelly Beach, near Fish Hoek, which is another popular spot known for its calm and clear waters, perfect for snorkeling adventures.
Here you will find various fish species, colorful marine flora, and possibly even playful seals.

Water Bicycles
Water bikes on the ocean?
Yep, you read correctly. This is a unique and fun experience that can only be found in Simon’s Town.
Introducing the Water Bicycles, a one-of-a-kind activity that allows you to ride a bicycle on top of the ocean. This clever invention has been designed to blend the thrill of cycling with the tranquility of gliding over water.

As you pedal on your water bicycle, your motion propels a turbine beneath the surface, generating forward momentum. And, you don’t need to worry about balancing as you would on an ordinary bike.
It’s really very clever in it’s simplistic design and while you’re perched on your seat, you’ll have a be treated to captivating views of vibrant fish and the fascinating activities taking place beneath the water’s surface.
Tours last approximately one hour and take a maximum of 4 people at a time.
Stand Up Paddleboarding
Located in a sheltered bay, Simon’s Town is the PERFECT place to try out stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).
The sea is almost always calm, and it’s the ideal setting for both beginners and experienced paddleboarders alike.
If you’re new to the SUP, fear not! Simon’s Town offers rental equipment and the opportunity to book an instructor who will guide you through the basics.
Embrace the serene waters as you learn to balance on the board and paddle your way across the glassy surface. If you don’t like the idea of the open water, just hang around in the harbour.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddleboarder, Simon’s Town offers an accessible and inviting environment for SUP enthusiasts.
What are you waiting for?
Shark Cage Diving
If you’re looking for something unique, and have tried out all the other watersports in Cape Town, then why not try a thrilling shark cage diving activity.
There are companies in Simon’s Town that offer this excursion in False Bay, and its a great alternative to the popular shark cage diving destination of Gansbaai (3 hour drive away from Cape Town).
While Cape Town’s shark cage diving is renowned for encounters with majestic great white sharks, it’s important to note that sightings of this species have become rare in recent years.
The presence of killer whales in the area has led to a decline in great white shark sightings as they pose a threat to these apex predators.
However, this doesn’t mean there’s nothign to see. You’ll have the opportunity to encounter the impressive Bronze Whaler sharks, also known as “Bronzies,” and they’re quite a lively species. And Mako sharks are also common.
These magnificent creatures provide an awe-inspiring experience as you observe them in their natural habitat.

Disclaimer: At the moment, November 2024, there are still no Great White Sharks in False Bay due to the presence of the orcas. However, there are other sharks, notably Bronzers, but no wildlife sighting is ever guaranteed.
Follow the guidance of experienced guides, you can come eyeball-to-eyeball with the ocean’s apex predators in a safe and controlled environment.
Always book your shark cage diving adventures with a reputable company.
Don’t forget your sun screen and of course, your underwater camera, but the operator will provide you with a wetsuit, goggles and anything else that you need. Just take a change of warm clothing for once you get out of the water.
Wrapping it Up
If you love the ocean, you will definitely love this part of the world.
Dive into the coastal wonders of Simon’s Town and Muizenberg, where the best watersports in Cape Town are found.
From shark cage diving to snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding to water biking, these vibrant areas will keep you busy exploring for a good few days.
So, pack your swimsuit, embrace the waves, and just get out there to try something new! And when you’re finished and hot and had the best day, go and relax in one of Cape Town’s amazing restaurants for dinner.
